Cycling along the Czech-Saxon border and the Elbe Canyon

Explore the Czech-Saxon border region by bike and enjoy the beautiful route in the Elbe Canyon.

Take the bike bus from Ústí n. L. to Tisá. Then, start off on your bike past the rock formations to Děčínský Sněžník. Ahead of you is a climb up the highest mesa in the Czech Republic. The view is worth the effort. After Sněžník, head for Germany, riding through Rosenthal and enjoying the romantic countryside on the way to Königstein, where the fortress is a must-see. On the way there, stop for a scenic view of the fortress in the distance at the pretty Spanghornaussicht viewpoint. In Königstein, take the Elbe Cycle Route (Elberadweg). It’s an easy 25 km ride to the Czech border. The trail runs along the bottom of the Elbe Canyon through Dolní Žleb to Děčín, where you can go for a swim at the Aquapark. From Děčín it is only 25 km via Velké Březno and its castle back to Ústí n. L.

Alternatively, it is also possible to take the trip from Děčín (For a shorter trip, start and end your ride in Děčín.), where cyclobus lines of the Transport of the Ústí nad Labem Region depart on selected days during the tourist season.  Bike bus service operates from April through October.

Ústí nad Labem Town

The regional town of Ústí nad Labem offers several interesting tourist destinations. Among other things, it is called the "city of waterfalls" - there are countless in its vicinity.

Ústí nad Labem town is situated in a beautiful countryside of a Labe valley in the north of the Czech Republic. It is in the heart of the Central Bohemian Uplands Protected Landscape Area and its famous valley called Porta Bohemica (or: The Gate to Bohemia).

Because of the good transport connections, the town is a natural starting point of trips to the region of Labe Sandstone Rocks, to the Bohemian Switzerland National Park, and to Krušné Hory Mountain Range.

The most notable parts of the town skyline are The Střekov Castle, Větruše (a small chateau with natural and mirror mazes, a lookout tower, and a restaurant), Mariánský Bridge, which is said to be one of the top ten structures of the last decade of the 20th century, and the Church of the Ascension of Our Lady. Its tower is deflected by 2 metres from the vertical axis!

In Ústí nad Labem, you can visit a lot of castles and chateaus (e.g. Blansko castle ruins, Krásné Březno chateau, Velké Březno chateau), interesting natural features (Erben’s viewpoint, Střekov viewpoint, Vaňov waterfall), and interesting museums (The Civil Protection Museum – the Underground of Ústí, The Model Trains Museum in Trmice Castle, The Municipal Museum of Ústí nad Labem), and the ZOO (with the attractive animal shows, night tours or the zoo-train).
