Roudnice nad Labem

City of 13,000 on the left bank of Labe river in a fertile Polabská lowlands.


The first mention dates from the second half of the 12th century. The city's history is very rich, there are documented traces of prehistoric settlement at a ford across the Labe river. It is one of the oldest towns in Czech.

The initial development of the town is credited to bishop Jan IV. of Dražice, who founded a monastery for a new order of Augustinian canons. The foundation stone of the monastery was laid in 1333 (its construction lasted 20 years). During the time of Archbishop Jan Očko of Vlašim New town of Roudnice was founded in 1378. In the late 16th century, Roudnice became a property of the Rožmberk family. In 1603 the estate Roudnice took Lobkowicz family. Since the end of the 19th century, Roudnice transformed into a modern city that has always been an important cultural, social and economic center of Říp region "Podřipsko".
